The three-day course offers an in-depth look at the essential factors to consider when designing your space.
Day 1
Day 1: Planning Your Space
- Function: Consider how you will use the space. Are you designing for relaxation, work, entertainment, or something else? Identifying the function will guide every other decision.
- Physical Limitations: Be mindful of any structural limitations such as windows, doorways, or immovable fixtures like radiators or built-in cabinets. These factors will affect layout options.
- Furniture: Choose furniture that aligns with the function and fits within your space limitations. Measure everything twice to ensure it fits properly.
- Size & Flow: Ensure that the room has a good flow. Think about pathways and how people will move through the space, avoiding overcrowding.
- Time Schedule: Having a clear deadline will help keep the project on track. It also helps break the project into manageable phases.
- Budget: Make a realistic budget early on, including allowances for unexpected costs. Prioritize the key elements that are most important.
Day 2: Creating a Mood Board
- Space Alignment: Layout your mood board logically. For example, group images by room or function, or place all color swatches in one area.
- Colors: Choose colors that evoke the right atmosphere. Bright and playful colors (yellows, oranges) give energy, while soft, muted tones (grays, neutrals) provide calmness.
- Textures & Patterns: Incorporate samples of textures like fabrics or flooring options to give your board tactile dimension. Patterns can inspire visual interest, whether it’s geometric, floral, or abstract.
Day 3: Shopping
- Practicality: Find stores or suppliers that align with both your vision and budget. Be cautious of items that look great but might not be functional for your space or budget-friendly.
- Stay Focused: It’s easy to get distracted when shopping. Refer back to your mood board and space planning to avoid impulse buys.
All these steps ensure that your project comes together harmoniously. Each day builds on the last, from creating a foundation (space planning), to developing visual inspiration (mood board), and finally sourcing the materials or pieces to bring your vision to life.
